Waco, Texas - Competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Regional in Fort Worth, Baylor's women's tennis team enjoyed their best-ever first day of ITA Regionals as they advanced six players to the round of 32 in singles and two doubles teams to the round of 16.
Six players, including three freshmen, advanced to the round of 32 by winning two singles matches each on Friday. Advancing were seniors Katja Kovac and Frida Borjesson, junior Vida Mulec and freshmen Barbora Blahutiakova, Whitney Morton and Patricia Graf. Kovac and Mulec, the tournament's top-seeded doubles team advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-3 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock's Lillo/Tohme. Borjesson and Graf, seeded sixth, defeated Schappacher and Vitrovcova of UT-Arlington, 8-3.
One of the Bears' most impressive victories of the day came when Whitney Morton, a freshman from Sarasota, Fla., defeated 21st seed Jeri Gonzales of Rice. Morton lost the first set 6-4 but bounced back to take the next two matches 7-6, 7-6.
"This is by far the most successful first day of competition we've ever experienced in the ITA Regionals," head coach Dave Luedtke said. "I was very encouraged by the play of our young players. They were very relaxed, very disciplined and showed a level of maturity I didn't expect, especially for such a big tournament this early in their careers."
