WACO, Texas - Baylor softball head coach Glenn Moore announced the signing of three athletes to National Letters of Intent here Wednesday during the first day of the early signing period. Amber Daniel, Kelly Osburn and Harmony Schwethelm will all join the program next fall.
"With this class, we continue to increase our athleticism with quality student-athletes," Moore said. "We addressed our needs, and we feel this was a very successful signing period."
Daniel, a 1999 graduate of Vanguard High School in Waco, Texas, will come to Baylor from Temple (Texas) College. A right-handed batter, Daniel will transfer in as a junior and will compete for time at both third base and catcher.
"Amber represents the type of student-athlete we desire to help Baylor softball become a power," Moore said. "She is a very aggressive player, she is an outstanding hitter with valuable experience behind the plate and at third base. Amber is the type of hitter you want in the batter's box when the game is on the line."
Osburn hails from Elkins High School in Missouri City, Texas, where she has earned letters in softball, volleyball and swimming. She led her club team, the Katy Cruisers, to the Amateur Softball Association Gold National Championship last summer. In the process, Osburn was selected first-team ASA all-America.
"Kelly is a tremendous athlete and will bring a lot of winning experience to our program," Moore said. "She is one of the top high school shortstops in the nation, as well as one of the top hitters. She will be a wonderful addition to our team."
With a 26-inch vertical leap, Osburn led the Elkins volleyball team to a No. 3 national ranking this season.
Schwethelm will come to Baylor from Smithson Valley High School in San Antonio, Texas. A switch hitter, she is expected to contend for time at both shortstop and in the outfield. Schwethelm matches her on-field talent in the classroom, she is currently in the top 10 percent of a senior class of more than 400 students.
"It will be very exciting to watch Harmony develop over the next four years," Moore said. "She is one of the fastest athletes we have ever recruited, and she has a cannon for an arm."
Baylor will open the 2002 season Feb. 1-3, hosting the Getterman Classic. The Bears will entertain Northwestern State, Southern and Texas-Arlington for the three-day affair.
