Football Lands 14 On Academic All-Big 12 Team

WACO, Texas - 14 Baylor football players were named to the 2001 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Among the 14 Baylor student-athletes honored four were recognized as first-team selections and nine were named to the second-team. First-team honorees included Greg Cicero, Luke Groth, John Martin, Stephen Sepulveda, and Josh Zachry.

Players earning second-team recognition included Daniel Andino, Randy Davis, Jon Erickson, Jonathan Golden, Travis Hicks, Andrew Obriotti, Lanny O'Steen, Derrick Pearcy, and Shane Williams.

Baylor landed the fifth most players on the all-academic team out of the 12 conference schools. Nebraska led the Big 12 with 30 honorees, Texas Tech followed with 18, while Texas and Missouri each had 15.

To be eligible student-athletes are required to maintain a 3.2 or better GPA to earn first-team honors, while the second-team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA. Student-athletes must also maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA, either cumulative or over the previous two-semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of the team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
