NEW ORLEANS - The 19th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team evened its record at 2-2 on the season Sunday, narrowly edging No. 42 Tulane on the road, 4-3.
"This was a significant win," Baylor head coach Matt Knoll said. "Tulane is better than the team's ranking indicates."
Baylor began the day by squeaking out the doubles point. The Bears lost at the No. 1 position as the fifth-ranked team of Reiner Neurohr and Mark Williams was upset by the No. 18 team of Michael Kogan and Mikko Viljanen, 9-8. Baylor won the No. 2 and No. 3 spots by similar margins, with Csongor Bibza and Cory Ross winning 8-6 at No. 2 and Zoltan Papp and Nathan McGregor winning 9-7 at No. 3.
Those slim margins of victory would prove to be the difference in the match as the two teams split in singles. The Green Wave won the first three singles matches to go up 3-1, but the Bears pulled out wins at the Nos. 2, 5 and 6 spots to claim the match win.
Sophomore Zoltan Papp made his first appearance in the singles line-up this season and won in straight sets at No. 6 to pull the Bears within one at 3-2. Senior Mark Williams, playing at No. 2 singles for the first time this spring, won in three sets to tie the match. Freshman Matias Marin then won at the No. 5 spot to give the Bears the dual match win.
"That was the first time Matias has been out there like that, with the match on his shoulders, and he performed nicely," Knoll said.
The Bears' next action begins Thursday as the team travels to Seattle for the National Team Indoors. The tournament, which features 16 of the top teams from around the nation, lasts through Sunday.
