WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team earned the highest ranking in program history as they moved up one spot to No. 17 in the country, according to the latest team rankings released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The women's No. 17 position beat the team's previous high ranking of No. 18. The Bears first ranked No. 18 on March 15, 2000. The team has come in 18th in five other polls since then, including the last three in a row dating back to December.
The Baylor women moved up despite losing their first match of the season Saturday. The Bears lost on the road against then-No. 2 Georgia to fall to 4-1 on the season.
After two weeks at No. 19, the Baylor men's team slipped to No. 20 in the latest listing. That ranking is the team's lowest since the end of the 1998 season, when the Bears finished the year at No. 26.
The Baylor men's and women's teams have both been in the top 20 for 47 straight weeks, dating back to March 29, 2000, when the women's team moved back up to No. 18.

The Baylor women will defend their ranking at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc., this weekend. They play No. 1 Stanford in the first round, Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
The Baylor men have the week off before beginning Big 12 Conference play Feb. 23 at noon on the road against Nebraska.
