WACO - Matt Williams was three-for-four with a triple and one run batted in and Justin Taylor earned his first win as Baylor defeated UT-Arlington 5-2 Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Josh Scott started for the Bears (3-1) and was very effective in his four innings of work. He threw four scoreless innings, only giving up two runs on two hits while striking out four.
Offensively, Williams and Steve Dorneman provided a spark for the Bears. Baylor got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when Dorneman led off with a bunt single followed by a single to center by Chris Durbin, putting runners on first and second. Trevor Mote then singled to right scoring Dorneman. After a passed ball advanced Durbin to third, Williams drove in Durbin with a base hit to left to put the Bears up 3-0 after three innings.
UT-Arlington (4-1) countered with a pair of runs in the fourth sparked by a two-run single by Joel Alvarado. Baylor added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Justin Taylor relieved Scott in the fifth inning and pitched three and a third innings. He gave up no runs on four hits while striking out three. Zane Carlson then came in the bottom of the eighth and pitched the final inning and two-thirds. He earned his first save of the season and his 16th career save.
The Bears, ranked 21st in the nation, return to action Friday night when they host No. 18 Cal State Fullerton. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
