WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's and women's track and field teams posted 10 first-place finishes here Satruday at the rain-soaked Dr Pepper Invitational at the Hart/Patterson Track Complex. The Lady Bears took the honors in six events, while the Bears captured first in four.
Leading the way for Baylor on the women's side were Ssereta Lafayette and Tamara Johnson. Lafayette finished first in the 100 meters with a time of 12.02 seconds and took third in the 200 meters with a 24.69 clocking. Johnson, meanwhile, placed third in the 100 (12.19) and second in the 200 (24.37). Teammate Barbara Petrahn won the 200 with a mark of 24.11 in her first individual race of the year.
Lanie Millar took home first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.97, Stephanie Bennett (2:21.00) placed sixth. Kara Newton gave the Lady Bears their fourth individual champion, pacing the field in the 5,000 meters by more than 17 seconds with a time of 17:42.97. Baylor also finished first in both the 4x100-meter relay (45.87) and in the 4x440-yard relay (3:56.89).
In the 400 meters, Tiffany Wise (57.19) and Keisa Brown (57.33) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Bennett turned in a fifth-place performance in the 1,500 meters with a mark of 4:45.55. Prior to her 5,000-meter title, Newton turned in a second-place showing in the 3,000 meters at 9:55.24. Alicia Hooker took third in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.06 seconds.
Rachal Roessler finished second in the discus (39.69 meters, 130-2) and third in the shot put (11.44 meters, 37-6 ?) to lead Baylor in field events. Amber Barnes also placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 10.64 meters (34-11). Kerry O'Bric finished third in the javelin with a throw of 40.82 meters (133-11). She also finished first in the long jump at 5.93 meters (19-5).
Cynthia Benson and Jordan Willmann both cleared 1.63 meters (5-4) to finish second and third, respectively, in the high jump. Rebecca Denham's pole vault of 2.75 meters (9-0 ?) was sixth, and Sonja denDulk (2.60 meters, 8-6 ?) was seventh.
The Baylor men dominated both the 400 meters and the 800 meters. Zsolt Szeglet eased to victory in the 400 with a time of 47.99. Joel Martin (49.21) took second, Luke Austin (50.23) tied for third and Ryan Kedley (50.68) was seventh. Damian Davis took home the hardwood in the 800, his time of 1:53.79 edged Dalibor Balgac of Southern Methodist by 13 hundredths of a second. Barrett Hall took fourth with a time of 1:54.59, and Floyd Thompson was fifth at 1:55.79.
Alex Adler gave the Bears a third individual champion, winning the 1,500 meters in a time of 15:00.20. Ferenc Bekesi finished second at 15:08.54. Baylor also finished first in the 4x440-yard relay, the Bears' "A" team turned in a time of 3:15.06 while the "B" team was second with a 3:22.60 clocking.
Martin Dossett finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.31, he also took third in the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.23 mark. Meanwhile, Nick Devenport (3:55.70), Matt Chance (3:59.80) and Jon Capron (4:00.97) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500 meters. Andrew Matina placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:03.29.
Baylor will return to action next weekend, traveling to Houston, Texas, for Saturday's Tom Tellez Invitational hosted by the University of Houston.
