Waco, Texas - Melvin Barnett's four-yard first quarter run accounted for the game's only score as the Gold beat the Green, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in Baylor's annual spring game. The win was secured after Samir Al-Amin stopped Green tailback Jonathan Golden short of the goalline on fourth-and-goal from the one with under a minute to play.
The Gold team won despite accumulating just 153 yards on offense and turning the ball over three times. Led by quarterback Greg Cicero, who completed 5-of-12 passes for 82 yards and an interception, the Gold marched 40 yards on nine plays before Barnett scored pwith 2:30 left in the opening period.
"We have a little more depth right now on defense than on offense," head coach Kevin Steele said. "Both teams played well in the defensive line and at linebacker."
Linebacker John Garrett and safety Kyle Staudt, both playing for the Gold, had game-high eight-tackle performances.
Barnett had 10 carries for a game-high 30 yards, while teammate Chedrick Ricks had seven attempts for 29 yards. Golden was held to just six yards on 10 carries for the Green team.
Green quarterback Josh Zachry completed 13-of-19 passes for 102 yards and Green wideout Reggie Newhouse led both clubs with five receptions for 49 yards. The Greens were held to just 119 total yards.
The Green-Gold scrimmage wrapped up Baylor's month-long spring drills. Bear freshmen report for fall practice Aug. 7 and Baylor opens the 2001 season Sept. 8 at home against Arkansas State.
