SAN ANTONIO - The 23rd-ranked Baylor softball team easily handled UT-San Antonio, 7-0, in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday but were eclipsed 5-3 in the second game as the Lady Bears wrapped up their incredible road trip to start the season.
Tuesday's games concluded a stretch where Baylor (23-7) played 28 of the team's first 30 games on the road. The Lady Bears swept a doubleheader from Oklahoma City University in the team's only home games so far this year.
Baylor took control of Game 1 early, scoring three times in the top of the first inning and twice more in the second. Koral King's bases-loaded walk and Colleen Bordages' single up the middle each drove in one run in the inning. Baylor's third first-inning run came on a wild pitch by UTSA starter Melanie Herrington (0-2).
The Roadrunners (10-12) got two quick outs to start the second inning, but Herrington hit Stacey Hundley and Ryan Stukel followed with her seventh home run of the year to give Baylor a 5-0 lead.
Baylor added single runs in the sixth and seventh to insure the victory. Joni Miller (14-3) pitched out of early trouble to record her fourth complete game shutout of the year. Miller allowed eight hits but struck out seven and walked just one in her seven innings.
In Game 2, the Lady Bears again struck early. Baylor pushed across three runs in the top of the second inning, all coming after two away. Kristen Lancaster and Kortny Westerfeld each walked and Vanessa VandeBurgt followed with a single to load the bases. Naomi Fitzgerald singled up the middle to drive in Lancaster and Westerfeld, and a subsequent double steal allowed Vandeburgt to score from third.
UTSA bounced right back, however, scoring twice in the bottom of the second, twice in the third and once in the fourth off Baylor starter Sarah Caudle (7-3). Jill Smith relieved and shutout the Roadrunners over the final 2.2 innings, but the Lady Bears could muster no further scoring off the UTSA mound corps.
The Lady Bears' next action comes as they host Northwestern State in a weekend series at Getterman Stadium. The two teams begin play with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
