EVANSTON, Ill. - The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team opened the final month of the season Sunday with a 6-1 loss on the road against No. 11 Northwestern.
The Wildcats (14-4) opened by winning the doubles point from Baylor (15-4, 5-1 Big 12) and followed that by taking five of six singles matches from the Bears.
Karin Andersson and Frida Borjesson won at No. 2 doubles for Baylor, but Northwestern won at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions to claim the doubles point.
Borjesson pulled out Baylor's only singles win, beating Ruth Barnes in a third-set tiebreaker. Borjesson became the fourth Bear to win 20 singles matches this season, joining Katja Kovac, Jahnavi Parekh and Vida Mulec.
Katja Kovac, playing No. 1 singles for just the second time this season, saw her nine-match winning streak come to an end Sunday. Kovac and Parekh traded places in the lineup against Northwestern, but to no avail as each player lost.
Each of Baylor's four losses this season have come against top-15 teams. Earlier this season, the Bears lost to No. 2 Georgia, No. 1 Stanford and No. 10 Texas. Baylor also claimed its first-ever win over a top-10 team this season when the Bears beat then-No. 8 UCLA.
After taking two of three matches this weekend in non-conference action, Baylor returns to Big 12 play Saturday against Colorado in Boulder. The match is set for 10 a.m. CT.
