Track: Marbach Takes Third in Steeplechase at Michael Johnson Classic

WACO, Texas - Baylor sophomore Leah Marbach shaved six and a half seconds off her season-best time here Friday night to finish third in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 14.46 seconds during first-day action of the Michael Johnson/Southwestern Bell Classic at the Hart/Patterson Track Complex.
Marbach is now just four seconds shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 11:10.00. Her previous best was an 11:20.96 clocking March 31 at the Tellez Invitational in Houston, Texas.
Baylor also got a second-place finish Friday. In section B of the women's pole vault, Baylor's Rebecca Denham finished second with a season-best clearance of 3.05 meters (10-0). Kristi Oberpriller of Southwest Texas cleared the same height but was awarded first because of fewer misses. Baylor athletes Candace Carroll (2.60, 8-6 ?) and Sonja denDulk (2.45, 8-0 ?) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Baylor's Rachal Rossler finished fourth in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 39.22 meters (128-8). Amber Barnes placed eighth at 32.48 meters (106-7), her best mark of the season.
Featuring more than 600 athletes from 22 schools, the Michael Johnson/Southwestern Bell Classic will continue Saturday. Action on the field will begin at 9 a.m. with running events starting at noon, finals on the track are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
