WACO, Texas - Baylor head men's tennis coach Matt Knoll announced Friday the signing of Germans Martin Hehensteiger and Markus Hornung for the 2001-2002 season.
Hehensteiger comes to Baylor from Schechen, Germany, a small town outside Munich. Hehensteiger was the 2000 German junior national champions and in December 2000 was honored as the Sportsman of the Year by the city of Rosenheim, Germany. He is a five-time Bavarian junior singles champion and a two-time Bavarian junior doubles champ. An excellent student, Hehensteiger also was a nationally competitive skier who won a pair of international skiing competitions.
"Martin fits right in with the mold of who we want to bring to this program," Knoll said. "He's a serious student with high tennis goals. He will bring a great deal to Baylor over the next four years."
Hornung joins the Bears from Ludwigshafen, Germany, where he was a two-time German national junior singles champion and a four-time national junior doubles champ. He won both singles and doubles at the Miami Shores Junior Championships in 1995, in doubles, he teamed with Johannes Michalsky, who played tennis at Baylor from 1996-2000.
"Markus brings a lot of maturity and experience to our team," Knoll said. "He will help us compete for championships here at Baylor."
The Baylor men face Texas Saturday at 1 p.m. in Austin in their final Big 12 Conference regular season match.
