LINCOLN, Neb. - The 13th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team wrapped up the 2001 regular season schedule with an easy win Saturday over No. 50 Nebraska, 5-2.
With the win, Baylor (19-5, 9-2 Big 12) tied its best-ever Big 12 Conference record. The Bears also finished 9-2 in conference in 1997 and 2000, both years the team finished second behind Texas. Nebraska dropped to 18-4, 6-4 with the loss.
At 9-2 (.818 winning percentage), Baylor currently sits in third place in the Big 12, just percentage points behind Texas and Oklahoma State. The Longhorns have one match remaining and lead the league at 9-1 (.900) after a win Saturday, the Cowgirls are 8-1 (.889) with two matches to go.
The Bears opened the match by sweeping doubles for the seventh time this season. At No. 2 doubles, Karin Andersson and Frida Borjesson won their team-leading 18th match of the year. The win was the 74th of Andersson's career, moving her just three victories shy of Sophie Goldschmidt's Baylor record for career doubles wins.
In singles, Baylor won the top two spots in the lineup and the bottom two spots. Frida Borjesson won her 25th match of the season and seventh in a row, tying her career high for consecutive wins. Borjesson and Katja Kovac both improved their conference singles records to 10-1.
The Bears now return home to host the 2001 Big 12 Tennis Championships, to be played April 26-29.
