STILLWATER, Okla. - Baylor's men's golf team shot a final round 308 Saturday and slid to 20th place at the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships Central Regional Thursday at the Karsten Golf Club and will not advance to the championship finals.
"I thought after winning the Big 12 Championship, we'd get through this no problem," Baylor head coach Tim Hobby said after the third round Saturday. "The back nine killed us. We were right there on the front nine."
The top 10 teams at each of three regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships Finals May 30 through June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C. The Bears, with a three-round total of 902, finished 10 strokes behind the cutoff of 10th place.
Additionally senior Jimmy Walker, who led Baylor all weekend and finished tied for fifth among 141 student-ahtletes at the regional, missed qualifying individually for the national finals by two strokes. Walker shot a final round two-over-par 74 Saturday and finished with a three-round 216 (69-73-74=216).
"It is kind of a bittersweet deal, we win the Big 12, but miss our other goal of making the nationals," Hobby said. "I wanted our seniors to make it to nationals in their final season after four seasons of regionals, but it didn't work out that way. But they put Baylor golf on the map, so I told them they have nothing to hang their heads about."
Seniors Brandon Sanders and Worth Williams finished 97th and 127th respectively, among individuals. Sanders shot a third-round 77 Saturday to finish tied at 97th with a 231. Williams hit an 81 in the final round and carded a 239 for the tournament.
Baylor's two freshmen faired well at the regional. Jon Antunes and Adam Meyer both shot 228 on the tournament and finished tied at 71st. Antunes shot a 77 Saturday, and Meyer carded a third-round 80.
Baylor, which earned an automatic qualifying bid to the championship after winning the Big 12 title, has competed in its four straight NCAA regionals. The Bears made previous trips to the NCAA regionals under Hobby in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
