#19 #67 | Pepperdine Penn | 3 4 |
After losing the doubles point and then falling behind 3-2, 67th-ranked Penn claimed the last two singles spots to upset No. 19 Pepperdine in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships First Round, 4-3.
The match came down to No. 1 singles, where Penn's Sanela Kunovac lost the first set 6-2 to Pepperdine's 29th-ranked Ipek Senoglu. Kunovac came back to take the second set 6-4, then took a 5-1 lead in the third set before cramps set in. Senoglu took advantage of Kunovac's weakened state, tying the score at 5-5 before Penn took an injury timeout. Kunovac then won the final two games to take the third set 7-5 and give the Quakers the win.
Penn advances to the second round, where the team will play the winner of this evening's Baylor-UT-Arlington match. Second round action begins Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
