WACO, Texas - Baylor head men's tennis coach Matt Knoll announced Tuesday the signing of a third player for the 2001-2002 season.
Benjamin Becker will join the Bears from Orscholz, Germany, where he was a two-time regional men's indoor singles champion (2000-2001). He was a semifinalist in the German under-18 national indoor championships in 1999. At that tournament, he defeated current Bear and 2001 Big 12 Freshman of the Year Reiner Neurohr in the quarterfinals.
Becker also played in the Junior Wimbledon in 1999 and was a finalist in the German junior national doubles championships. He is currently ranked 53rd nationally in Germany in men's singles.
"We feel fortunate to have a player of his ability and character coming in," Knoll said. "He will provide immediate help in both singles and doubles, and will help us continue to compete for championships."
Becker joins a pair of previous signees in Germans Martin Hehensteiger and Markus Hornung. All three will join the Bears this fall.
