WACO, Texas - Baylor Head Coach Kevin Steele had good reason to smile Friday afternoon following the Bears' final major scrimmage of the fall. Baylor's third-year head man was pleased with all phases of his team following the 90-minute workout.

"It was a very good scrimmage," Steele said. "We got a lot done. We looked at a lot of different things and worked on a lot of different situations. They played hard. The execution on both sides of the ball was the best it's been. The timing and execution is starting to gel offensively. It's not where we need to be, but we're on track. It's close to coming."

Offensive highlights from the scrimmage included an eight-yard touchdown run by Melvin Barnett, an eight-yard scoring pass from Greg Cicero to Andra Fuller and a 40-yard touchdown scamper by walk-on running back Frank Draa. Adam Stiles also connected on a 39-yard field goal into a steady breeze.

After two weeks of preseason drills, the Bears are off until Monday.

"We're giving them the weekend off," Steele said, "and that's good. They'll come back fresh Monday and that will give us two good weeks to get ready for (the Sept. 8 season opener against) Arkansas State."

In other team news Friday, senior center Joe Jackson and senior safety Samir Al-Amin were voted captains by their teammates.

"Those are two very deserving guys who have been instrumental in the positive things that have taken place on this football team."
