Sept. 17, 2001
WACO, Texas - Baylor softball head coach Glenn Moore announced the program's schedule for the 2002 season here Monday. The Bears will host 20 home games along with a pair of tournaments during the pre-conference portion of the schedule.
Coming off a 38-22 season in which the school record for wins in a season was tied, Baylor will open the 2002 season Feb. 1-3, hosting the Getterman Classic at Getterman Stadium. Teams participating will be Northwestern State, Southern University and Texas-Arlington. The Bears will also welcome Akron, Oakland, Creighton, San Diego State and Stephen F. Austin State to Waco three weeks later for the Green and Gold Challenge.
Baylor will play in a total of six in-season tournaments, including the two it is hosting. The Bears will return to the UTA Invitational, where they were quad-champions with Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Louisiana-Monroe last season, Feb. 8-10. The following weekend, Baylor will travel to the University of Houston Tournament.
The Bears will bookend their spring break week in early March with a pair of tournaments. Baylor will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the March 1-3 Lady Moc Invitational, other teams participating in that tournament will be Arkansas, Chattanooga, Illinois, Lipscomb, Marshall, Middle Tennesse, Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
From there, Baylor will travel to California for a midweek game against 2001 Women's College World Series participant Stanford, followed by a weekend tournament at Fresno State. The Bears are expected to see Boston University, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Indiana, Tennessee Tech and perennial powerhouse and host Fresno State at that tournament.
"I think this schedule mirrors our team right now," said Moore, who will welcome 11 newcomers to his squad this season. "We have some games against some really strong opponents, but we also have some early games at home that will allow us to grow as a team in a familiar environment. We are hopeful that the pre-conference portion of our schedule will prepare us for the always rigorous Big 12."
In Big 12 play, Baylor will host Kansas, Iowa State and Oklahoma for two-game series this season. The Bears will also play home-and-home series with Texas and Texas A&M.
Baylor will also host UTA, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, New Mexico State, Oklahoma City University and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this season in non-conference games. Aside from tournament play, Baylor's only road non-conference game this season will be the March 5 date at Stanford.
