SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
San Diego's Stephanie Barnier scored 55 seconds into overtime as the Toreros beat Baylor 3-2 Sunday afternoon in front of 401 fans at Torero Soccer Stadium.
USD's Barnier, sister of Baylor freshman Rachel Barnier and an all-conference selection in 2000, knocked home the game-winning goal as the Toreros completed their comeback. The Bears (2-2) built an early 2-0 lead, but the San Diego (4-0) offense scored once in the first half, once in the second half and once in overtime to claim the victory.
Baylor's offense again revolved around two freshmen. April Robertson recorded her team-leading third goal of the season in the 14th minute to put the Bears up 1-0. The score was assisted by senior Rachel Kacsmaryk and came after Robertson scored both goals in Baylor's 2-1 win over Loyola Marymount Friday night.
Five-and-a-half minutes later, freshman Ginny Rosario-Tull dribbled past a defender and knocked the ball in from 15 yards out for her second goal of the year.
USD began its comeback at the 26:33 mark, when Andrea Kessling cut the Baylor lead in half with a shot from 10 yards out. The Bears carried that 2-1 lead into halftime, but the Toreros' Casey Loveland tied the game with just under 20 minutes to go with a straight-on shot from 20 yards out.
Barnier's score in overtime gave the Bears their first overtime defeat since Nov. 9, 1996, when Baylor lost to Texas A&M 5-4 in overtime in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. Baylor is now 5-2-5 all-time in overtime matches.
The Bears head to Fayetteville, Ark. for their next action as the team competes in the Lady'Back Invitational. Baylor will face Southwest Missouri State Friday at 1 p.m. and host Arkansas Sunday at 2 p.m.
