BAYLOR HOSTS THE GETTERMAN CLASSIC

Baylor opens its 2002 season this weekend, hosting the Getterman Classic presented by Compass Bank and Hilton. Northwestern State, Southern and Texas-Arlington will converge on picturesque Getterman Stadium for the three-day, double round-robin event. Action gets underway Friday at 11:00 a.m. CST with UTA taking on Southern, Baylor's first action will be Friday at 4:00 p.m. CST against Southern with a 6:30 p.m. CST game against Northwestern State to follow. This is the first of two regular-season tournaments the Lady Bears will host. Six teams will participate in the Compass Bank Invitational, also held at Getterman Stadium, Feb. 22-24.
Head Coach Glenn Moore
Glenn Moore is in his second season as head coach at Baylor, coming to Waco after a stellar three-year tenure at Louisiana State. In his first season at Baylor, Moore led the Lady Bears to a 38-22 overall record and a sixth-place, 7-9 mark in the Big 12 Conference. Along the way, Baylor established school season records for wins, home runs (24), fielding percentage (.963), on base percentage (.329), shutouts (17) and saves (7). The Lady Bears also enjoyed a school-record 11-game winning streak in February. While at LSU, Moore amassed a 117-25 (.820) record in two-plus seasons as the head coach. In that time, he led the Tigers to consecutive Southeastern Conference titles and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Regionals. He was named head coach at LSU just prior to the 1998 Regionals, giving him three NCAA postseason appearances as a head coach. The Tigers went 56-10 in 1999 en route to the SEC regular season title and the conference tournament championship. Last season, the Tigers finished 59-13, one game shy of the College World Series. LSU finished eighth nationally in team batting average (.310) and ninth in team ERA (1.11). Moore has a career record of 177-64 (.734), he posted a 22-17 mark in his first year as a collegiate head coach at William Carey in Mississippi.

THE GETTERMAN CLASSIC FIELD
Baylor is 42-27-1 all-time against teams in the Getterman Classic. The majority of that has come against Texas-Arlington, against which Baylor has a 37-25-1 all-time record. The Lady Bears posted a 4-1 mark against the Lady Mavs in 2001. Baylor is 5-2 all-time against Northwestern State, winning two of three meetings last season in Waco. Baylor has never faced Southern.
MOORE vs. GETTERMAN CLASSIC FIELD
Baylor head coach Glenn Moore is 15-2 in his career against teams participating in the Getterman Classic. Moore, a 1993 graduate of Northwestern State, is 10-1 against his alma mater, including a 3-1 mark while at Baylor. He has faced Southern only once, defeating the Jaguars 12-0 in the first game of the 1999 NCAA Regional at Baton Rouge, La. All five of his meetings with Texas-Arlington came last season, Moore led the Lady Bears to a 4-1 record against the Lady Mavs a year ago.
THE NORTHWESTERN STATE DEMONS
Northwestern State (0-0) is coached by Ty Singleton, in his second season as a collegiate head coach. Singleton led NSU to a 30-20 record last season. Prior to taking over the Demon program, Singleton spent three seasons as an assistant at Texas.
NSU Notes: The Demons are led by senior 1B Erin Mancuso, who posted a team-best .323 batting average with six home runs, 25 RBI and 11 doubles in 2001. ... Junior RHP Amanda Ortega returns to anchor the NSU staff after going 19-9 with a 1.52 ERA last season.
THE SOUTHERN LADY JAGUARS
Southern (0-0) is coached by Nancy Marshall.
SU Notes: The Lady Jaguars are led by sophomore 1B/2B Monique Kendrick, she was second on the team with a .310 batting average last season to go along with 1 home run, 10 RBI and nine stolen bases in 10 attempts. ... Sophomore RHP Kristy Roberts is the leading returner in the circle for Southern, she was 6-11 with a 7.83 ERA in 2001.
THE TEXAS-ARLINGTON LADY MAVS
Texas-Arlington (0-0) is Debbie Nichols-Hedrick. She is in her sixth season as a collegiate head coach, all coming at UTA. In that time, Nichols-Hedrick has amassed a record of 112-139-1. Nichols-Hedrick was a three-time NFCA all-America pitcher at Louisiana Tech (1987-1990).
UTA Notes: The Lady Mavs are led by sophomore OF April Jones, who was tops on the team with a .315 batting average in 2001. ... Sophomore RHP Katy Cox, a former Gatorade Texas High School Player of the Year, was UTA's ace in the circle last season, she was 17-15 with a 1.43 ERA as a freshman.
BEARS IN SEASON OPENERS
Baylor is 8-8 all-time in season openers, however, the Lady Bears are 4-2 in such games since the reinstatement of the program in 1996. Last season, Baylor won its third straight season opener, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-0 in five innings at the Southwest Texas/Chuck Nash Invitational in San Marcos, Texas. The last team to defeat the Lady Bears in a season opener was Illinois-Chicago, the Flames knocked off BU 2-0 Feb. 13, 1998 at the UTA College Classic in Arlington, Texas.
BAYLOR IN HOME OPENERS
This marks the first time since 1996 and only the fifth time ever that Baylor has opened its season at home. The Lady Bears are 8-8 all-time in home openers, including a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma City University last year. Baylor has won four of six such games since the reinstatement of the program in 1996.
LADY BEARS NEARING MILESTONES
Baylor begins the 2002 season just 16 wins shy of the program's 500th all-time victory, including games played from 1974 to 1988. The Lady Bears' program currently has an all-time record of 484-486-3, meaning Baylor will play its 1,000th game by the end of February. Since the program's reinstatement in 1996, the Lady Bears are 188-161. Statistically, Baylor is 17 RBI shy of No. 1,000 and 869 at bats shy of No. 10,000 since 1996.
BIG 12 COACHES TAB BAYLOR SIXTH
Baylor was picked to finished sixth in the Big 12 Conference this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll. The Lady Bears were 38-22 overall last season, finishing sixth in the Big 12 with a 7-9 league mark. Defending champion Nebraska was the overwhelming favorite in the preseason poll, garnering 78 total points and seven of 10 first-place votes. Oklahoma, which claimed the Big 12 Tournament title last year, was picked second with 72 total points and two first-place nods. Texas was third with 65 points and the final first-place selection. Kansas (52 points) was picked fourth, followed by Texas A&M (49), Baylor (42), Oklahoma State (32), Texas Tech (28), Missouri (23) and Iowa State (9).
TRANSFERS FIND HOME AT BAYLOR
Four members of the 2002 Lady Bears' squad transferred to Baylor from other schools, three coming in this season and all three from four-year schools. Last season, Kourtny Westerfeld joined the Baylor program after spending one season at nearby McLennan Community College. This season, the Lady Bears welcome sophomores Danelle Arnold and Katie Decker from fellow Big 12 Conference institution Nebraska, and sophomore Kelly Levesque from Southeastern Conference power Louisiana State.

BAYLOR ADDS 3 EARLY SIGNEES
Head coach Glenn Moore signed four players to National Letters of Intent last fall during the early signing period. Joining the Lady Bears' program next year will be 3B/C Amber Daniel, SS Kelly Osburn and SS/OF Harmony Schwethelm. Daniel, a 1999 graduate of Vanguard High School in Waco, Texas, will come to Baylor from Temple (Texas) College. Osburn preps at Elkins High School in Missouri City, Texas, and Schwethelm attends Smithson Valley High School in San Antonio, Texas.
