Three of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On Stevie Nicholas' injury:
"We're still trying to make up for the loss of Stevie Nicholas. We've made a couple of movements, like moving Tisha Schwartz to the outside... She will carry the same load or maybe more than what Stevie had. We've seen some improvement in the last couple of games."
"She'll have surgery next Wednesday. She could be back in 3-4 weeks, or it could be 3-4 months if they find something else."
"On the bright side, it's preparing us for a time without players like that. It will be good for us in the long run."
On fighting the injury bug:
"The club team had open tryouts, and we were able to pick up a few players who hopefully will be able to contribute in a few weeks. Right now, we're going to have to go out and battle with what we have."
Head Soccer Coach Nick Cowell:
On the past weekend:
"Friday night - what a great atmosphere they have there [at Oklahoma]: great facility, a great field, great crowd. We got off to a good start, up 2-0 at the half... Our team was very disappointed on the way they played in the second half - not so much with the score, but with the way we fell apart mentally more than anything."
"They regrouped and played much better on Sunday. Things just didn't fall our way. Reviewing the film, we saw that again; we really outplayed them except for a couple of breakdowns."
On this week's games:
"Kansas and Missouri are both regionally ranked. They will be good tests for us... We know we can play at this level; we just need to get the job done. We're almost there. We just need to get over the hump. One good win Friday could do it."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On the past bye week:
"The open week was good for us. It came about halfway between the start of two-a-days and the 12th game, so it's good timing."
"We did work some against ourselves, some against Kansas, and then we scrimmaged some of our redshirts and younger guys."
"We focused on trying to take care of the football.. Sometimes, you can overemphasize things and make people over-paranoid. But when the issue is as important as turnovers, you've gotta talk about it."
On trying to break their Big 12 losing streak:
"I've thought about it. We'll talk about it with them, make sure they understand what's before them... We're not just gonna hide it. These guys are mature enough to handle it. It's out there; we have the opportunity to do something about it."
On the rest of the season:
"If we continue to play run defense the way we're playing it, and continue to improve on pass defense, and continue to improve in all the other areas, it's gonna come down to have we learned to control the football."
On Kansas quarterback Bill Whittemore:
"He didn't start the season vs. Iowa State; he came in at about the halfway point. He's continued to improve... You can see he has good command of the game... He throws the ball very well on the move."
On the Kansas defense:
"They don't blitz an awful lot... You can see their base defense; they're gonna play you the way they play you. Linebacker [Greg Cole] is a playmaker. He plays sideline to sideline."
