Three of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On Saturday's win at Iowa State:
"We're coming off a big week with a good win at Iowa State. We're seeing some people step up, which is important... Tisha Schwartz showed that this weekend... She's understanding how she's going to score for us, and she's taking a leadership role on the outside."
On this week's schedule:
"We're looking forward to the challenge... Everybody so far is getting healthier... At Iowa State, we went back to the 4-2 [formation] and everybody got settled down. They got a lot more comfortable with the patterns, etc... It proved to us that we just need to settle into the 4-2 that we're running."
Head Soccer Coach Nick Cowell:
On the past weekend:
"It was kind of a Jekyll-and-Hyde weekend. Kansas came in highly ranked in the region. It was a defensive game, and we came out on top. Sunday was the opposite, a very offensive game -- kind of a shootout... Not the type of game we really wanted."
On this week's games:
"[Last weekend] it was two games versus two opponents we are very evenly matched with. The learning curve needs to be going a little faster. Now we're getting into the meat and potatoes of the schedule. These games will be good indications of how we're progressing."
On goalkeeper Monica Housden:
"Housden will leave for Mexico early next week to train with the Mexican National Team. She may be gone only during the week and back on weekends. We'll see."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On last week's win over Kansas:
"It was obviously good to get a win, and a Big 12 win. I thought the team did what they had to do to win, though there were mistakes... Obviously we had more people make plays. We had 12 guys catch the ball; I think every receiver on the team caught one."
"Defensively, our front continues to play solid... Our linebacker corp will be affected a little bit with the loss of John Garrett for the season... They'll have to step it up a bit."
"The kids handled it very well postgame. It's not like they went in the locker room and acted like they had just won the national championship. In fact, the first comments made in the locker room were about getting focused for this week."
On this week's opponent, Texas A&M:
"Texas A&M is a good football team. They have an outstanding defense, and they are coming of age offensively. But this football team, when we hit the bottom of the tunnel, we will be ready to play."
"There's things we'll draw from going to College Station [last year] and playing well, but they're very minute. This is a different team, a different city -- a different game."
"Like a lot of teams, they've gotten better as they've gone along... It's a growth process, as it obviously will be when you have a new quarterback."
On the Baylor offense:
"Reggie [Newhouse] has carried a pretty big burdenm for awhile. There have been plenty of games where he was the playmaker, period... When you can get more guys making plays, it affects how the defense plays you and helps us."
"Aaron [Karas] is still learning the offense and where to go with the ball. The diversity of the offense, the diversity of the play-calling, and all the guys stepping up helped... A lot of credit goes to [offensive coordinator] Dave [Baldwin] and his staff."
On the Aggies' 16-game unbeaten streak against Baylor:
"We'll use that, but you don't want to put too much on these guys. We've gotta worry about Saturday and not too much about the past, but we will bring it up."
On losing John Garrett for the season:
"You could tell it bothered him. He was real quiet. But he's a tough guy. He understands this is something he'll bounce back from."
