HOUSTON, Texas - Joni Miller held Houston to just two hits and tossed her third shutout of the season here Saturday night as Baylor defeated the host Cougars 4-0 in the final game of pool play at the Houston Invitational. With the win, Baylor (13-2) will be the second seed in Sunday's tournament play. The Lady Bears will play the winner of the McNeese State-Sam Houston State game at 3 p.m.
Baylor scored a run on two hits and a pair of Houston errors in the top of the first. Kelly Levesque led off with a single to third base, however, UH third sacker Michelle Keith's throw to first sailed high, allowing Levesque to advance to second. The play was not over, though, right fielder Kristen Glowacz backed up the throw and tried to get Levesque at second, but her throw sailed into left field, allowing Levesque to advance to third. Two batters later, Sarah Caudle slapped a double to the centerfield wall to plate Levesque.
The Lady Bears tacked on another run in the fifth. Carrie Leerberg led off with a bunt single and then stole second. Kim Wilmoth then moved Leerberg to third on a groundout. That set the stage for Leerberg to score on a Jenny Johnson wild pitch. Baylor closed the scoring in the sixth when Danelle Arnold hit a two-run home run to straightaway center.
Miller (6-1) walked four and posted five strikeouts in the winning effort. Johnson (3-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with one walk and nine strikeouts over seven innings.
