Houston - The Baylor softball team defeated McNeese State, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Houston Invitational to claim the co-championship with Ohio State. The Buckeyes had travel arrangements that did not allow them to play the championship game.
With the win, the Bears move to 14-2 for the season.
Baylor got things started in the bottom of the fourth when Kristen Lancaster drew a walk and advanced to second on a Danelle Arnold single. All - Big 12 second baseman Stacey Hundley then doubled to left field to send Lancaster home.
The Lady Bears added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth when first baseman April Luce doubled to left center, and pinch hitter Kourtny Westerfeld hit her first home run of the season with a shot to left center to give Baylor a 3-0 lead.
McNeese State threatened with a run in the top of the sixth, but freshman pitcher Cristin Vitek quickly sat down the next two batters to end the inning.
Vitek was credited with the win, improving her record to 4-1. She was in the circle three and one-third inning and only allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six. Katie Decker started the game in the circle with only one hit, three walks and one strikeout.
The Bears racked up seven hits with Luce going two-for-two with a double. Hundley also had two hits for the game.
The Lady Bears return to action Monday, hosting Northwestern State for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Getterman Stadium.
