Box Score

WACO, Texas - Two weeks ago, Baylor had thrown just four no-hitters in the history of Lady Bear softball. Now, Baylor has thrown four in the past two weeks.

Joni Miller came one out away from a perfect game en route to a 3-0 no-hitter against Creighton, and Cristin Vitek and Katie Decker combined for a five-inning, 10-0 no-hitter against Stephen F. Austin here Friday night in first-day action of the Compass Bank Invitaitonal.

Baylor is now 20-2 on the season and has won 10 straight, one shy of the school record established last season. This is the best 22-game start in school history, eclipsing the 19-4 start from a year ago.

In other first-day action at the Compass Bank Invitational, Akron edged Oakland 7-6, San Diego State downed Oakland 8-1, SFA got past Akron 4-3 in 10 innings and San Diego State defeated Creighton 3-1.

Miller (8-1) carried a perfect game into the seventh before issuing a two-out, full-count walk to Ashlee Trapp. Other than that, the Edmond, Okla., native was flawless, using just 88 pitches and throwing 60 of those for strikes. Miller also struck out eight.

Baylor scored a run on three hits in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Danelle Arnold singled up the middle to score Levesque from third. The Lady Bears tacked on two runs in the fifth on four hits. Kristen Lancaster and Stacey Hundley both had RBI singles in the inning. Arnold finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Against SFA, Baylor scored six unearned runs after a two-out Lady Jack error in the bottom of the third to extend a 1-0 lead. After April Luce reached on a throwing error by the SFA shortstop and Sarah Caudle singled, Holly Fields laced her second double of the game down the line in left to plate both runners. Arnold then tripled to right-center, scoring Fields, Carrie Leerberg followed with a single to score Arnold and push the lead to 5-0. Following a pair of walks, Baylor scored two more runs when a Stephanie Pomes grounder to short was misplayed.

Kourtny Westerfeld ended the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth, slapping her second home run of the season. This one was a three-run shot to left field that invoked the mercy rule. Westerfeld finished the game 2-for-2 with a run and four RBI. Fields and Arnold also had two hits each.

Meanwhile, Vitek and Decker combined to extend Baylor's streak of consecutive innings of no-hit ball to 19 frames. Vitek (7-1) lasted three and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts to get the win. Decker walked one and struck out one in one and one-third innings of work.

Baylor returns to action Saturday, hosting Akron at 3 p.m. CST and Oakland at 5 p.m. CST. Oakland and Creighton square off in the first game of the day at 9 a.m.
