Softball Falls 5-2 at No. 3 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford scored four two-run outs here Tuesday night en route to a 5-2 victory over Baylor in softball action. With the loss, the Lady Bears fall to 24-5 on the season, Stanford improves to 19-2.

Stanford plated two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Robin Walker led off with a triple to left-center, two outs and a walk later, Walker scored on a Maureen LeCocq single down the leftfield line. LeCocq then scored on a Cassi Brangham single up the middle.

The Cardinal stretched its lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the second. Walker got things started with a two-out single and then scored on a Jessica Mendoza triple to right-center. Sarah Beeson followed with a single up the middle to plate Mendoza.

Baylor got a run back in the third. Kelly Levesque drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a Stacey Hundley bunt single. After Sarah Caudle reached on a walk, Kristen Lancaster bounced into a fielder's choice to plate Levesque.

Stanford was quick to answer, though, Cassi Brangham led off the bottom of the inning with a home run off the top of the right-field fence. That homer snapped Cristin Vitek's 37-inning scoreless streak. It was the first run the freshman southpaw had surrendered since Feb. 17 against McNeese State.

The Lady Bears got a run back in the sixth. Caudle led off with a single and moved to second on a Lancaster groundout. Danelle Arnold then singled up the middle, moving Caudle to third, and later stole second. After a Carrie Leerberg walked, Nan Wilkins scored Caudle with a fielder's choice grounder to short.

Joni Miller (10-3) started and took the loss for Baylor. She allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings of work. Vitek allowed just one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in four and one-third innings.

The Lady Bears return to action this weekend at the Hallowell Classic, hosted by No. 13 Fresno State. Baylor faces Indiana at 3 p.m. CST in its first action Friday, followed by a 7 p.m. game against the host Bulldogs.
