FRESNO, Calif. - A two-run San Diego State fourth spelled doom for Baylor softball here Saturday night as the Lady Bears dropped a 2-1 decision to the Aztecs at the Hallowell Classic, hosted by Fresno State.
With the loss, Baylor falls to 27-6 on the season. San Diego State moves to 16-11-1 and remains undefeated in the Hallowell Classic.
Kristen Lancaster put the Lady Bears up 1-0 with a leadoff home run in the top of the second. It was her second of the day and sixth of the season, a total that ranks tied for fifth all-time at Baylor.
However, that lead was erased in the fourth. Janna Kovensky singled with one out in the inning and the scored on a Sarah Hershman triple to left-center. One out later, Kelcy Murphy ripped a double to center, scoring Hershman and giving the Aztecs a 2-1 lead they never relinquished.
Baylor had plenty of chances to retake the lead in the final three innings. However, the Lady Bears left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings and stranded runners at second and third in the seventh. In all, Baylor left 10 runners on base, eight in the final three innings.
Cristin Vitek (11-3) took the loss for Baylor, she went the distance and was touched for two runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. However, she was out-dueled by SDSU hurler Bre DeSanta, who the Lady Bears defeated two weeks ago in Waco. This time out, DeSanta allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts, overcoming six walks.
Baylor wraps up play here Sunday, the Lady Bears face Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. CST, followed by a meeting with Boston.
