Men's Golfers Advance To First-Ever NCAA Finals Championships

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Baylor's men's golf team earned the school's first-ever berth in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships after shooting a final-round 304 Saturday and finishing seventh at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Ark.
The Bears tallied a three-round 882 and finished 17 strokes behind first place Oklahoma State and Purdue at 865. Baylor's third-round 304 dropped the Bears three spots in the rankings, but the top 10 finish was enough to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship Finals to be held May 29 through June 1 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
This marks Baylor's first advancement to the NCAA Finals in seven NCAA Regional appearances. The 30-team field at the NCAA Finals is made up of the top 10 schools in each of three regional championships.
The Bears were led all tournament by junior Jamie McLeary, who shot a two-over 74 Saturday and finished tied for 12th individually at 216 (71-71-74). Sophomore Adam Meyer carded a four-over 76 in the final round and finished tied at 33rd with a 221 (72-73-76).
Freshman Ryan Baca finished in a tie at 37th with a 222 after hitting a final-round eight-over 80 Saturday. The final Bear scorer was freshman Derek Abel, who shot a team-best two-over 74 in the final round and finished tied at 45th with a three-round 223. Sophomore Will Doughtie carded a nine-over 81 Saturday and placed in a tie for 96th at 232.
