WACO, Texas - Baylor third baseman Michael Griffin was named to the first-ever Big 12 All-Freshman Team by the league's coaches, the conference announced Thursday.
Griffin, a true freshman, hit .282 in his first season as a Bear with seven home runs and 50 RBI. The rookie from Dallas, Texas, ranked among the Big 12 Conference leaders in RBI for much of the season and finished the year second on the team in that category. His seven homers were also the second-best total on the team and were the most by a Baylor freshman since Matt Williams hit nine in 1998.
The rookie hot-corner man was named honorable mention on Collegiate Baseball's 2002 Freshman All-America Team earlier this spring after being selected second-team all-Big 12 by the Waco Tribune-Herald and Austin American-Statesman.
