Waco, Texas - Kevin Steele was duly impressed with his teams' work ethic as Baylor went through its first day of two-a-day football practices Sunday with both an early morning and evening workout session.
"Mentally, our morning practice was as good as any we've had since I've been here," Steele said. "They came out here and learned and worked hard and got better. They're in shape, so we're not as concerned with the physical preparation as we are with the mental approach to improving this football team every day. They showed excellent concentration."
Both practices were two hours, 15 minutes in length and featured both team and individual drills in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. The Bears' first day of full-pad practices is Wednesday.
"Obviously, you get a lot of work done once the pads are on," Steele said, "but you can get a lot of work done without the pads, as well."
Steele plans on alternating the Bears' practice schedule between single-practice days and twice-a-day workouts. On the days with only one practice, the team will spend extended time in classroom settings.
"This allows the players to rest their bodies more between practices," Steele said. "Plus, we're counting on getting as much done in a meeting room as we do on the practice field."
Baylor opens the 2002 season Aug. 31 on the road against California.
