Waco, Texas - Mother Nature waited until the Baylor football team went through its first practice in full pads Wednesday before unleashing the typical August Texas heat associated with fall drills. The Bears practiced for over two hours in a single, afternoon practice session.
"The players did a good job of fighting through the heat and humidity," Steele said, as temperatures reached the upper 90s and a searing sun beat down on the practice field. "All the elements of Texas fall two-a-days were there today. It didn't bother them a whole lot, because they're in pretty good shape.
"Regardless of how good of shape you're in, a week into practice you're going to have tired legs. But they haven't shown any lapses mentally, which is a sign of being out of shape. They were very focused today. They're beginning to get a little tired, but they had good effort and good execution."
Baylor continues to alternate twice-a-day and once-a-day practices until Aug. 24, two days prior to fall classes beginning on campus.
Baylor opens the 2002 season Aug. 31 on the road against California.
