Playmaking Bears Please Steele

As the Baylor football team completed its first full week of fall practice Friday afternoon, Head Coach Kevin Steele was pleased with the playmaking ability his team has shown thus far.
"We had play after play being made today - both offensively and defensively," Steele said. "You'd see a great break by a Willie Andrews or a Bobby Hart. You'd see a great pass rush move by Kevin Stevenson or A.C. Collier. Then you look up and Greg Cicero is throwing a nice crossing route to Reggie Newhouse or a screen to J.T. Thompson. They're just making plays and it's very competitive, which is making us better at each position."
Baylor worked out once Friday, spending over two hours in full pads.
The Bears are beginning to see the customary bumps and bruises that accompany preseason workouts. Defensive end Aaron Lard is sidelined after undergoing a procedure on his right knee Wednesday to ease soreness and is expected back in two-to-four weeks. The running back position was temporarily depleted Friday when Anthony Krieg (ankle sprain) sat out and Rashad Armstrong (groin strain) was held out of full-speed drills.
"These little nicks that keep a guy from a practice here or there is an opportunity for someone else to step up and produce," Steele said. "Today, Jonathan Golden and Chedrick Ricks got a majority of the reps at running back, and they both showed us something."
The Bears will conduct their first full-scale scrimmage of the fall Saturday night. Baylor continues to alternate twice-a-day and once-a-day practices until Aug. 24, two days prior to fall classes beginning on campus.
Baylor opens the 2002 season Aug. 31 on the road against California.
