Waco, Texas - Quarterback Greg Cicero, receiver Reggie Newhouse and running back Rashad Armstrong stood out for the Baylor offense as the Bears conducted their first full-scale scrimmage of the fall Saturday night at Floyd Casey Stadium.
Going against the first-team defense, Cicero completed 9-of-17 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Both of his touchdown passes - a 17-yarder and a 40-yarder - went to Newhouse, who finished the scrimmage with five catches for 110 yards. Armstrong, who worked with both the first and second teams, led all rushers with 76 yards on 16 carries. He also scored on a three-yard run.
"We had good effort and made a lot of plays," Head Coach Kevin Steele said. "We had a bunch of plays being made. We've got to execute better, and we've only got two weeks before we go to California. So we need to really hone up our execution and eliminate mistakes.
"Greg was very smooth tonight and Reggie made some big catches. I thought Jonathan Golden (28 yards, two touchdowns) ran the ball hard. Rashad is still trying to get himself in shape, but he runs hard and he's difficult to tackle."
Defensively, sophomore end Khari Long had a pair of sacks, while Michael Boyd and Matt Amendola both recorded interceptions. Boyd returned a Davon Vinson pass 38 yards for the first score of the scrimmage.
"I thought Kevin Stevenson and Ethan Kelley on the defensive line performed very well," Steele said. "John Garrett was very active and our secondary did some good things. I was pleased with Willie Andrews at safety."
Three defensive starters, linebacker Greg Wade and ends A.C. Collier and Aaron Lard, did not play. Lard had a cyst removed from his knee this week and is out for 2-6 weeks, while Wade and Collier were held out with muscle strains.
Baylor opens the 2002 season Aug. 31 on the road against California. Kickoff is 12:30 p.m. (PDT).
