SWEET MEMORIES - Invitations have gone out for the Oct. 4-6 reunion of the Baylor team that appeared in the 1957 Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans. The Bears upset the No. 2 ranked University of Tennessee Volunteers, 13-7, in what has become one of the best-remembered games in Baylor football history. Those coming in for the event will get a tour of the Baylor campus at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, followed by a 7 p.m. dinner in the "B" Association Room at Floyd Casey Stadium. On Saturday the 1956 Bears will be joined by other BU letter winners for a "B" Room buffet luncheon prior to Baylor's 1 p.m. game with the University of Kansas. The players will sit as a group and be recognized at halftime. On Sunday the attendees again will gather in the "B" Room for a 9 a.m. "farewell coffee." . . . Hopefully, Dave Campbell, editor of The Insider - the fine publication of the Baylor Bear Foundation - will have a chance to participate in the reunion and explain how he was pressured into accurately predicting the final score at the '57 Sugar Bowl. While few believed the Bears had any chance of winning, Campbell - then a Waco Tribune-Herald sportswriter - appeared on a pre-game radio show with other journalists and was told by a producer that somebody had to predict a Baylor victory. Dave volunteered and became the smartest person in the French Quarter following the Jan. 2 game . . .
GLASS IMPROVING - His former Sugar Bowl teammates are hoping that Bill Glass will be feeling better and be in Waco for the reunion weekend. Glass, a Baylor All-American lineman in 1956 and numerous All-Pro during a distinguished National Football League career, suffered a stroke about three weeks ago, but apparently is recovering nicely. According to his son Bobby, Glass had to cancel a number of speaking engagements and is now recuperating at home. Bobby says his dad would enjoy hearing from former teammates and other friends. His address is 232 Hunter Pass, Waxahachie, TX 75165 . . . In addition to Baylor launching its Big 12 Conference schedule on Oct. 5, the annual meeting of the "B" Association will be held at 9 a.m. on that date. Current president Knox Pittard is hoping for a big "B" Room turnout . . . When the Bears open their 2002 home schedule against Samford University on Sept. 7, fans will get their first look at the new video screens at Floyd Casey Stadium. As the school year progresses the system also will be used at Ferrell Center, Baylor Ballpark and Getterman Field . . .
SERVICES FOR CRENSHAW - Condolences go out to the family of Bobby Crenshaw, a 1961-63 football letterman who was buried in Borger on Aug. 17. He died from a massive heart attack on Aug. 14 while participating in a pool tournament, one of his favorite pastimes. Crenshaw is survived by his children, Courtney and Chris, and a brother, Gale Crenshaw of Michigan. Two of his pallbearers were former teammates Lewis Sessums and Harry Beavers. Crenshaw had been living in Borger for only a few months following his spending many years in the Dallas area. He attended the May breakfast meeting of mid-1960s football players in the D-FW area and will be remember for his wit and charm. After playing high school football in Pasadena, Crenshaw came to Baylor in the fall of 1960 and started at tackle for the freshman team. He lettered all three of his varsity years and capped his Baylor days as a member of the great 1963 team that lost a 7-0 heartbreaker to Texas in Austin. Baylor ended the year in the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston and defeated LSU, 14-7. Following the season Crenshaw was an All-Southwest Conference tackle and honorably mentioned on several All-American teams. Crenshaw also will be missed on the golf courses throughout the Southwest. He was a regular participant in the Harry Beavers Tournaments held for the past 17 years in Texas and Oklahoma . . .
