WACO, Texas - Baylor Head Coach Kevin Steele was all smiles Thursday as all 80 members of the Bears' football varsity reported to campus, joining 23 newcomers who had arrived earlier in the week to begin preparations for the 2002 season.
"This group of returning players is a special group," Steele said. "They've been very focused and they're very determined. They've got a lot of pride in themselves. This summer, working with Big John Williams and the strength staff, those guys came together. They've got a purpose and they're much more of a family now. We're excited about them being back."
The Bear veterans went through team meetings Thursday night. Friday is media day. The first day of full-squad workouts is Saturday, with a single afternoon session scheduled. Baylor will hold two-a-day workouts on every other day beginning Sunday, with single-practice days in between.
The first-year players reported Monday and have gone through three practices, including a pair of workouts Thursday. Steele thought the transition from newcomer-only practices to full-squad sessions would be a smooth one.
"We'll plug these new guys in with these returning players and line up and go," Steele said. Baylor opens the 2002 season Aug. 31 on the road against California.
