WACO, Texas - Baylor softball assistant coach Mark Lumley was named a National Assistant Coach of the Year by Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director magazine earlier this week. Lumley was one of just 14 Division I coaches so honored, and he joined Lori Sippel from Nebraska as the only recipients from the Big 12 Conference.
Lumley, who serves as Baylor's hitting instructor and works with the Lady Bear outfielders, is starting his third season at Baylor and his fifth season working with head coach Glenn Moore. Last season, the Lady Bears established more than 50 school records, including RBI, triples, total bases and stolen bases, during a 46-18 season.
All three Baylor outfielders received postseason honors last year. Nan Wilkins and Kelly Levesque were named first-team all-Midwest Region, while Sarah Caudle earned Big 12 all-tournament honors. Levesque was also a first-team all-Big 12 selection.
The National Assistant Coach of the Year program, sponsored by AFLAC Insurance, is designed to pay tribute to high school and college assistant coaches throughout the nation. Nominated by head coaches, other assistant coaches, players, fans and media, 524 high school, junior college and college assistant coaches were selected from more than 300,000 nominees.
