Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State freshman Elizabeth Bogus' goal midway through the second half proved to be the only score of the night as the Sun Devils beat Baylor Friday evening, 1-0, to snap the Bears' team-record-tying five-game win streak to start the year.

Arizona State (2-1-2), ranked 22nd in the preseason polls but unranked after a rough start, pitched its first shutout of the season. The outstanding effort was needed to beat Baylor (5-1-0), who narrowly missed a sixth-straight win.

Bear goalie Tanya Sena nearly matched the Sun Devils' performance, allowing only the one goal while recording a season-high six saves. The Sun Devils' lone goal came at the 66:10 mark, as Bogus broke away from the pack for the score, assisted by freshman Manya Makoski.

The Bears missed two chances to tie the game with under five minutes remaining. With just under four minutes to go, junior Emily Fukuchi unleashed a turnaround volley from the top of the penalty area that went past ASU goalie Kelly Fitzgerald only to rebound off the far post. Three minutes later, with less than a minute remaining, Fukuchi found herself unmarked in front of the Sun Devil net but put the ball over the bar off of a high cross.

Baylor was outshot 12-8 by Arizona State on the night, marking the first time in six games the Bears have been outshot by their opponent. At 5-1, Baylor is off to the team's best start since 1999, head coach Nick Cowell's first season at the helm. That team began the year 6-1 and finished 14-7, narrowly missing an NCAA Tournament bid.

From Tempe, the Bears trek across the state to Flagstaff, where they will face Northern Arizona Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
