Baylor opens its 2003 season this weekend, hosting Centenary, Florida and Texas-Arlington for the Getterman Classic presented by Compass Bank and Hilton. Action gets underway Friday at 11 a.m. as Florida takes on Centenary. The Lady Bears' first action is at 4 p.m. Friday against Centenary, followed by a 6:30 p.m. game against UTA. This is the first of two regular-season tournaments at Getterman Stadium; Baylor also hosts the Compass Bank Invitational Feb. 21-23. HEAD COACH GLENN MOORE
Glenn Moore is in his third season as head coach at Baylor, coming to Waco after a stellar three-year tenure at Louisiana State. In his first season at Baylor, Moore led the Lady Bears to a 38-22 overall record and a sixth-place, 7-9 mark in the Big 12 Conference. Last season, he guided the Lady Bears to even greater successes with more than 50 team and individual, single-game and single-season school records. Baylor finished 46-18 overall and 10-8 in the Big 12 Conference, establishing school marks for victories in a season, conference victories in a season and highest conference finish (fourth). Moore also led Baylor to a national ranking for the second straight season and two wins over top 10 teams, as many top-10 victories as the Lady Bears had amassed in the previous 16 seasons of the program's existence. Moore has a career record of 223-82 (.731); he posted a 22-17 mark in his first year as a collegiate head coach at William Carey in Mississippi. Moore is 201-63 (.761) at the Division I level.
THE GETTERMAN CLASSIC FIELD
Baylor is 52-25-1 all-time against the three teams competing in this weekend's Getterman Classic. The Lady Bears are 40-25-1 against Texas-Arlington, 8-0 against Centenary, and 4-0 against Florida. This is the first non-neutral meeting between Baylor and Centenary. This is Florida's first visit to Waco since March 29, 1985; the Lady Bears defeated the Gators 5-4 that day. Baylor is 25-6 at home against UTA, and the Lady Mavs have lost nine straight in Waco.
MOORE vs. GETTERMAN CLASSIC FIELD
Baylor head coach Glenn Moore is 15-1 in his career against teams competing in the Getterman Classic, 9-1 while at Baylor. Moore is 7-1 against Texas-Arlington with all eight meetings coming in the past two seasons. While at LSU, Moore was 2-0 against Centenary and 4-0 against Florida. This is his first meeting against Centenary while at Baylor, while he is 2-0 against Florida while with the Lady Bears.
GETTERMAN CLASSIC HISTORY
This is the second rendition of the Getterman Classic, presented by Compass Bank and Hilton. Last year, Baylor won the inaugural event, going 6-0 with two wins over Northwestern State, Southern and Texas-Arlington. Northwestern State and UTA tied for second at 3-3, splitting their two games. Southern finished fourth, losing all four games.
BAYLOR IN SEASON OPENERS
Baylor is 9-8 all-time in season openers; however, the Lady Bears are 5-2 in such games since the reinstatement of the program in 1996, and they have won nine of their last 13 season openers. Last season, Baylor won its fourth straight season opener, defeating Southern 21-1 in five innings at the Getterman Classic. The last team to defeat the Lady Bears in a season opener was Illinois-Chicago; the Flames knocked off BU 2-0 Feb. 13, 1998 at the UTA College Classic in Arlington, Texas.
BAYLOR IN HOME OPENERS
This marks the second straight season but only the sixth time ever that Baylor has opened its season at home. The Lady Bears are 9-8 all-time in home openers, including a 21-1 victory over Southern last year. Baylor has won five of seven such games since the reinstatement of the program in 1996.
THE CENTENARY LADIES
Centenary (0-0) begins its first season with former Eastern Kentucky head coach Mark Montgomery at the helm.
CC Notes: The Ladies return 14 letterwinners, seven starters and four pitchers from a 2002 squad that finished 19-35 as a Division I independent. ... Centenary hit .213 as a team last year with 17 home runs and a .948 team fielding percentage. Junior IF Amanda Sharp led the Ladies with a .267 batting average. Centenary was led in the home run department by four players with three each. Three of those players - junior IF Jordan Lansdale, senior 1B/C Katie Meinen and sophomore DP Janis Kelley - return for the 2003 season. Lansdale also hit .262 and led the Ladies with 23 RBI. ... Centenary boasted a 2.53 staff ERA last year with six shutouts, holding opponents to a .238 batting average. Junior RHP Cheyenne Daries (11-10, 2.02) returns as the Ladies' ace, while RHP Sherilyn Bossier (2-13, 2.26) is again the Ladies No. 2 after 15 starts in 2002. ... The Centenary roster is littered with former Texas prepsters; seven Ladies hail from the Lone Star State.
THE FLORIDA GATORS
Florida (2-0) is in its third season under the direction of Karen Johns, who has amassed a 71-63 record in her two-plus years at Gainesville. Johns was an assistant coach at Alabama while Baylor head coach Glenn Moore was head coach at Louisiana State.
UF Notes: Florida opened its 2003 season last Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at Central Florida. The Gators defeated the Knights 6-5 in the opener and 1-0 in the nightcap. Both pitching staffs tossed one-hitters in the second game. ... Florida returns 17 letterwinners and all four pitchers from a 2002 squad that finished 32-35 overall and 12-18 in the Southeastern Conference (third in the East, eighth overall). Also, 12 returning Gators earned starting experience last year. ... The Gators hit .249 as a team last year with 21 home runs and a .957 team fielding percentage. Senior SS Jackie Marchetta leads Florida at the plate; she was tops on the team last year with a .320 batting average and 18 stolen bases. Sophomore UT/P Mandy Schuerman is the Gators' top returning home run threat after hitting six last year. ... The Gators posted a 3.08 staff ERA last year with 11 shutouts, holding opponents to a .254 batting average. Junior RHP Amanda Moore (11-14, 2.89) and sophomore RHP Amanda Knowles (12-10, 2.40) split ace duties. Schuerman was 7-9 with a 3.53 ERA.
THE TEXAS-ARLINGTON LADY MAVS
Texas-Arlington (0-0) is in its seventh season with Debbie Nichols-Hedrick at the helm. Nichols-Hedrick, a former all-America pitcher at Louisiana Tech, is 131-169-1 during her career, all coming at UTA.
UTA Notes: The Lady Mavs return eight letterwinners and one pitcher from a 2002 squad that finished 16-30 overall and 9-17 in the Southland Conference. ... UTA hit .220 as a team last year with seven home runs and a .958 team fielding percentage. Senior OF Melanie Williams led the Lady Mavs with a .311 batting average and was the only UTA player to hit above .300. Williams also led UTA with 15 stolen bases. Sophomore C/IF Crystal Krebs and junior OF/IF Stephanie Owens led the Lady Mavs with three homers each last year. ... UTA posted a staff ERA of 2.80 with nine shutouts, holding opponents to a .256 batting average. Junior RHP Katy Cox, a 2002 Getterman Classic all-tournament honoree, suffered from poor run support. She was 10-21 last year despite a 2.11 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 205.1 innings. ... Freshman IF Jenna Fortune prepped at Keller (Texas) HS along with 2002 Baylor softball signee Chelsi Lake and 2002 Baylor volleyball player Alison Heffner.
LADY BEARS TABBED FOURTH BY BIG 12 COACHES
Along with receiving one first-place vote Baylor was tabbed, along with Texas A&M, to finish fourth in the Big 12 Conference preseason coaches' poll. The Lady Bears and the Aggies, who did not receive a first-place nod, both received 54 total points. Nebraska was the coaches' preseason favorite; the Huskers received five of nine first-place votes and 77 total points. Texas and Oklahoma received two first-place votes each. The Longhorns were picked to finish second with 70 points, while the Sooners were tabbed third with 67 points. Oklahoma State (44 points), Kansas (32), Iowa State (21), Missouri (19) and Texas Tech (12) rounded out the 10-team poll.
BAYLOR JUST OUT OF NFCA TOP 25
Baylor just missed a preseason ranking as the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Preseason Top 25 was released Wednesday by the sport's governing body. Baylor was the second team among those also receiving votes, just eight points behind No. 25 Massachusetts. UCLA received 18 of 22 first-place votes and was the coaches' pick as the preseason favorite. Fellow Pac-10 powers Arizona and defending national champion California follow in that order with the Wildcats and the Golden Bears earning two first-place nods each. Nebraska and Michigan tied for the fourth spot. Washington, Louisiana State, Oklahoma, Florida State and Cal State Fullerton rounded out the top 10 in that order. Baylor faces five of the top 12 teams this season. Along with Big 12 foes Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas, the Lady Bears face seventh-ranked Louisiana State and 11th-ranked DePaul.
HOME, SWEET HOME
Baylor posted a 25-6 record at home last season, establishing a school record for home wins in a season. The Lady Bears also enjoyed a school-record 24-game home winning streak that dated back to 2001 season. In two years under head coach Glenn Moore, Baylor is 40-12 (.769) at Getterman Stadium. The Lady Bears are 54-25 (.684) in the stadium's four-year existence.
GETTERMAN ATTENDANCE CONTINUES TO GROW
In 23 home dates, Getterman Stadium has attracted 9,248 fans last season. That is a Getterman record, shattering the 2001 total of 5,556. The per-game average of 402 also topped the 2001 record of 370. Six of the eight largest crowds and eight of the 10 largest crowds in the stadium's four-year history came last season. Baylor finished 13th nationally in total attendance for 2002 and 20th nationally in per-game attendance.
BAYLOR ADDS 4 EARLY SIGNEES
Head coach Glenn Moore signed four high school athletes and one junior college transfer to National Letters of Intent here Wednesday, the first day of the 2002 fall signing period. Kylie Conroy (Carrollton-Creekview [Texas] HS), Lisa Ferguson (Fort Worth-Pascal [Texas] HS), Chelsi Lake (Keller [Texas] HS), Melissa Maler (Temple College/West [Texas] HS) and Erin Sheek (Deer Park [Texas] HS) will join the Lady Bears next fall.
TRANSFERS FIND HOME AT BAYLOR
Four members of the 2002 Lady Bears' squad transferred to Baylor from other schools, three coming in this season and all three from four-year schools. In 2001, Kourtny Westerfeld joined the Baylor program after spending one season at nearby McLennan Community College. Last year, the Lady Bears welcome sophomores Danelle Arnold and Katie Decker from fellow Big 12 Conference institution Nebraska, and sophomore Kelly Levesque from Southeastern Conference power Louisiana State. This season, Amber Daniel joins the Baylor program after two all-America seasons at Temple [Texas] College.

Inside Baylor Sports, a half-hour look at the world of Baylor athletics, airs weekly throughout Central Texas and the region. The program, co-hosted by John Morris and Lori Scott-Fogleman, airs on KCEN-TV Channel 6, Fox Sports Net Southwest and the College Channel (Waco cable channel 18). Baylor rests for four days before embarking on a four-day trip through the Pelican State. The Lady Bears play a 3 p.m. Feb. 6 game at Northwestern State, alma mater of head coach Glenn Moore. Baylor travels from Natchitoches, La., to Baton Rouge, La., for the Tiger Classic over the weekend. Moore spent two-plus seasons as Louisiana State's head coach before coming to Baylor in the summer of 2000.
