Volleyball Downed By Oklahoma in Five

WACO, Texas - After starting off slowly, Baylor rebounded only to drop another heartbreaker, 3-2 (30-22, 25-30, 20-30, 30-24, 15-11) to Oklahoma in Big 12 Conference action Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center. Senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz led the Bears with 21 kills and 12 digs, marking the sixth time this season she has topped 20 kills and her team-leading seventh double-double.

Freshman middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young and sophomore outside hitter Kelly Spriggs recorded 12 kills each for Baylor (9-8, 2-3 Big 12) and Guilliard-Young added seven blocks. Sophomore setter Emily Huston had 54 assists, while freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakulya and senior libero Stevie Nicholas each had double-digit digs.

Joanna Schmitt had a match-high 26 kills and added 13 digs, while Christina Maynes had 19 kills and a match-high 15 digs for Oklahoma (9-7, 1-3). Keri Coats had 15 kills, and Rachel Jackson had 56 assists and 12 digs. Laura Tomes had a match-high eight blocks.

Baylor got off to a good start in game one by scoring the first three points, but Oklahoma tied the game at 7-7 and again at 10-10. The Sooners slowly pulled away by hitting .262, while Baylor was held to a .000 hitting percentage and the Sooners took game one, 30-22.

The Bears started to settle in a tightly contested game two. The two teams traded points as neither led by more than two points until Baylor scored four-straight points behind the serve of Huston to take a 28-24 lead. The Bears hit .233 for the game to even the match, 30-25.

Game three continues to be a bright spot for Baylor as they are 12-5 in the frame this year. Freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc served to start the game for the Bears and they quickly scored the first six points. Baylor didn't let up as it hit .536 and held the Sooners to .150 to win the game, 30-20.

Oklahoma returned the favor in game four by jumping out to a 5-1 lead. The Sooners hit .286 to the Bears' .182 to take the game, 30-24, and send the match to a decisive fifth game.

Game five was tied, 10-10, until Schmitt took over and led the Sooners to four-straight points to bring it to match point. The Bears kept the match alive with a sideout, but Maynes put the final point away for Oklahoma to win the game, 15-11.

Baylor returns to action when it hosts Alcorn State in a non-conference match on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
