Nov. 10, 2003
WACO, Texas - Baylor senior wide receiver Robert Quiroga was named Special Teams Player of the Week by the Big 12 Conference Monday. Quiroga, a product of Holmes High School in San Antonio, Texas, joins Samir AL-AMIN as the only Bears to ever earn Big 12 player of the week honors. Al-Amin was so honored on defense during the 2001 season.
Quiroga, in just his second game returning kickoffs, returned a kick 100 yards for a touchdown Saturday against Texas Tech. He became the second player in school history and the seventh in Big 12 history with a kickoff return of 100 yards.
It was Quiroga's second consecutive game with a touchdown return for a touchdown; he had a 98-yarder Nov. 1 at Kansas State. Quiroga had 178 yards on six returns against Texas Tech, five yards shy of the school record for kickoff return yardage that he set against Kansas State.
Quiroga joins Ben Kelly (Colorado-3), Randy Davis (Baylor-2), Sirr Parker (Texas A&M-2) and Joe Walker (Nebraska-2) as the only players in Big 12 history with at least two career kickoff returns for touchdown. He and Kelly are the only to have two in one season; Kelly also had such returns in consecutive games.
With 11 kickoff returns in Baylor's 10 games, Quiroga is one return short of being eligible for national rankings, needing 1.2 returns per game. His average of 32.8 yards per return would lead the nation if eligible. Even with one more return for no yards, Quiroga would rank fifth nationally.
Oklahoma quarterback Jason White earned player of the week honors on offense, while Nebraska linebacker Demorrio Williams was honored on defense.
Baylor plays its final road game of the 2003 season Saturday, traveling to Norman, Okla., to face top-ranked Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CST at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
