WACO, Texas - Daniel Sepulveda, Brian Bays and Quincy Cosby, members of the Baylor football team, visited Wiley Middle School on Monday. The players spoke to the seventh and eighth grade football teams.
Sepulveda, who is an All-America and Ray Guy Award candidate, spoke to the kids about working hard on the field and in the classroom.
"You need to show that you have a strong work ethic in practice," said Sepulveda, "and carry that over into the classroom."
He also explained that when he was their age, he was small and did not get his growth spurt until later. He told the players that he kept working hard and trying his best, and now he is successful today.
Bays agreed with Sepulveda. He said that he was the smallest guy on his junior high team, but he worked hard, and he became a starter in high school.
Wiley's head coach, Jeff Dunn, was excited to have the Baylor athletes visit with his students.
"These guys need to understand that that they have to stay focused on their future," he said, "and that their education is more important than what they do on the field."
Cosby did not waste time in making this point to the young players. When he asked if anyone had goals and dreams, many kids said they wanted to play in the NFL.
"That's great," said Cosby, "but do you know what you have to do to get there? You have to make good grades, get a high school diploma and go to college."
Before leaving, the athletes signed autographs and took pictures with the kids. Sepulveda showed a few curious students how the Baylor football team properly warms-up before practice.
"Those kids asked me a lot of questions," said Sepulveda. "I had a great time."
