WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team won its Big 12 home opener over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Bears won the doubles point and rolled through singles competition defeating the Red Raiders 7-0, Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
In doubles play the team of Barbora Blahutiakova and Alison Bradley upset No. 24 Beverly Dawson and Irina Tereschenko 9-7 in their first appearance in the No.1 spot. Stephanie Balzert and Daria Potapova defeated Katja Kovacic and Anchen Lombard 8-6, and the duo of Vida Mulec and Anna Moncolova won their match 8-2 which moves Mulec into fourth place all-time in career doubles wins (70) for the Bear's.
In singles action, Moncolova won her first match in the No. 1 spot this season 6-4, 6-1 over Tereschenko . Moncolova was moved to the No. 1 spot after Mulec suffered a mild groin strain in her doubles match. Izabela Mijic added onto her three game winning streak by defeating Kendall Brooks 6-3, 6-4. Zuzanna Krchnakova earned her first win as a Bear over Kovacic 7-6, 6-2. Other impressive wins were registered by Potapova who coasted through her match against Dawson 6-0, 6-0, Blahutiakova who won over Browning 6-0, 7-5, and Stephanie Balzert who claimed a win in the No. 2 spot over Lombard 6-4, 6-3.
"We achieved our main goal today, and that was to make a statement," Coach Joey Scrivano said. "We beat a nationally ranked team in Texas Tech and stayed focused throughout the match."
With the win, Baylor moves to 2-3, 1-0 Big 12, on the season while the Red Raiders drop to 0-3, 0-1 Big 12. The Bear's next match will be against the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth tomorrow at noon.
