Waco, Texas - Guy Morriss' first Baylor team will play seven home football games as part of its 12-game 2003 regular-season schedule, Director of Athletics Tom Stanton announced Thursday. It will be just the fourth time in school history that the Bears have played seven home games in a season.
"The opportunity for Guy's first Baylor team to play seven home games is very important," Stanton said. "It will give Baylor fans plenty of chances to support Guy and his staff and to be a part of the excitement that currently exists with our football program."
The schedule is highlighted by home games against Big 12 foes Colorado (Oct. 4), Texas (Oct. 25), Texas Tech (Nov. 8) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 22) as part of an eight-game conference slate. Including those four opponents, six of Baylor's 2003 foes were bowl participants a year ago.
The Bears also renew their rivalry against long-time Southwest Conference foe SMU, whom they faced 76 times between 1916 and 1995. The Mustangs come to Floyd Casey Sept. 13 for the start of a two-game home-and-home series that will send Baylor to Dallas in 2005.
Baylor's home schedule also includes non-conference foes UAB (Aug. 30) and Sam Houston State (Sept. 21). The SMU contest is slated for Parent's Weekend, while the Texas Tech game is featured as part of Homecoming festivities.
Nine of the Bears' 12 games will be played in the state of Texas, including the first six.
"It would be nice if we could play all of games in Texas," Morriss said. "The more games we can play in-state, the more our fans, our players' families, our high school coaches and our recruits can watch us."
Baylor plays road games at North Texas (Sept. 6), Texas A&M (Oct. 11), Kansas (Oct. 18), Kansas State (Nov. 1) and Oklahoma (Nov. 15).
