BATON ROUGE, La. - For the second time in three days, all-America pitcher Lindsay Chouinard handcuffed Baylor's hitters as No. 11 DePaul defeated the Lady Bears 7-0 here Sunday at the Tiger Classic. Baylor falls to 6-5 with the loss. DePaul moves to 5-0 and was named tournament champion.
Baylor plays either LSU or Stephen F. Austin later Sunday at 2 p.m.
Sarah Douglas gave DePaul an early lead with a two-run first-inning single. Back-to-back doubles by Chouinard and Gina Ramacci to lead off the fourth gave DePaul another run. Two batters later, Liz Bouck singled in Ramacci. The Blue Demons put the game away in the fifth. Christina Douglas reached on an error, and Sarah Douglas followed with a single. After a couple of strikeouts, Ramacci laced a three-run homer to left-center that capped the scoring.
Baylor used all four pitchers, and only Sarah Caudle escaped unscathed. Katie Decker (1-2) started but lasted just 2.1 innings; she allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Joni Miller was next and allowed two runs on two hits with no walks and one strikeout. Cristin Vitek was touched for three runs, all unearned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Caudle scattered two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Chouinard, meanwhile, allowed just one hit, a sixth-inning one-out single off the glove of second baseman Bouck's glove by Stacey Hundley. Chouinard walked three but struck out four.
Baylor returns to action next weekend at the Mardi Gras Classic, hosted by Louisiana-Monroe. The Lady Bears face Mercer at 4 p.m. Friday, Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m. Saturday and the host Indians at 1 p.m. Saturday. Bracket play begins Saturday evening and continues through Sunday.
