BATON ROUGE, La. - Moments after watching Stephen F. Austin knock off No. 7 Louisiana State 1-0, Baylor exploded for 12 hits in an 8-0 five-inning victory over SFA here Sunday in the final game of the Tiger Classic. Baylor improves to 7-5 and snaps a five-game losing streak with the victory. SFA falls to 4-6.
Kelly Levesque, Baylor's lone all-tournament selection, and Kim Wilmoth both went 3-for-3, while Kelly Osburn went 2-for-2 with five RBI. Cristin Vitek (4-1) allowed two fourth-inning hits, walked two and struck out three for the complete-game shutout.
Baylor scratched for its first run of the day when Levesque led off the third with a single through the right side of the infield. She then stole second, moved to third on a Stacey Hundley sacrifice bunt, and scored on an Osburn single up the middle.
The Lady Bears got things started in the fourth with singles by Carrie Leerberg, Levesque and Hundley. Osburn then lifted the first pitch she saw from Nicole Carter (1-1) over the fence in left for her second career home run and the second grand slam by a Baylor batter this season. Danelle Arnold was then hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Wilmoth single. Stephanie Pomes followed with a line-drive double off the wall in left and scored on a throwing error.
Baylor returns to action next weekend at the Mardi Gras Classic, hosted by Louisiana-Monroe. The Lady Bears face Mercer at 4 p.m. Friday, Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m. Saturday and the host Indians at 1 p.m. Saturday. Bracket play begins Saturday evening and continues through Sunday.
