WACO, Texas - A trip to southern California proved to be a successful one for Baylor's women's tennis team. The Bears, ranked No. 42, posted a 4-3 victory over No. 48 Pepperdine in Mailbu, Calif., on Thursday afternoon.

The Waves won the doubles point by taking matches at the top two spots. The Bears' lone doubles win came at No. 3 when Stephanie Balzert and Izabela Mijic won by default, the Waves didn't field a team at that spot.

In singles Baylor's youngsters came through to secure the victory over the Waves. When singles action began, the score was already 1-1 since Pepperdine didn't have a player in the No. 6 spot. Freshmen Stephanie Balzert and Izabela Mijic and sophomore Daria Potapova each prevailed at Nos. 2, 5 and 4 respectively. Barbora Blahutiakova won at No. 6 by default.

"This was a great win for us, Pepperdine is a tough team," said Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano. "We had to win the hard way. We had some chances in doubles that we didn't capitalize on. We struggled in singles but persevered and got the job done."

Baylor will host two matches this weekend. The Bears will put their unblemished league mark (3-0) on the line when they take on No. 53 Kansas State (6-2, 2-1) on Sat., March 15 at noon. They will host No. 25 Illinois (8-3) on Sun., March 16 at 10 a.m. Both matches will be contested at the Baylor Tennis Center.
