CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Five Lady Bears had at least two hits, including three of the bat of Sarah Caudle, as No. 25 Baylor defeated Eastern Michigan 12-2 in five innings here Sunday at the Islander Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lady Bears improve to 18-8 on the season with the win.
Baylor scored in all five innings and crossed the plate nine times before Eastern Michigan got on the board. Two hits and two EMU errors led to a pair of Lady Bear runs in the top of the first. Caudle started the scoring with the first of two doubles, scoring Kelly Osburn from second.
The Lady Bears tacked on four more runs on three hits and two Eagle errors. This time, it was Kim Wilmoth who did most of the damage with a two-run double. Caudle also had an RBI single up the middle. All three Baylor runs in the third came thanks to Kelly Levesque's second home run of the season.
Eastern Michigan scratched the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the third, thanks to a Deanna Wisnieski double. Baylor pushed its lead to 12-1 with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. Christie Koester singled with one out in the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring.
Caudle matched career highs with three hits and three RBI. Levesque, Wilmoth, Osburn and Harmony Schwethelm had two hits each, and Osburn tied the Baylor record with four runs scored.
Joni Miller (4-2) pitched the first 3.0 innings and was touched for one run on two hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Katie Decker tossed the final six outs, allowing one run on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
Baylor returns to action next weekend at the Malahini Tournament hosted by the University of Hawai'i. The Lady Bears begin the tournament Thursday, facing Cal-Riverside at 5 p.m. CST and Buffalo at 9 p.m. CST.
