WACO, Texas - Lauren Bay struck out 12 in a one-hit shutout here Saturday as No. 16 Oklahoma State defeated Baylor 2-0 in Big 12 Conference softball action. The Lady Bears fall to 24-12 overall and 0-1 in conference play after their first home loss of the season. The Cowgirls win their ninth straight, improving to 23-6 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Baylor's Kim Wilmoth provided the game's first hit, a third-inning slap single to third that proved to be the Lady Bears' only hit of the game. That hit, her ninth in as many at bats over the past four games, moved Kelly Levesque, who reached on a walk, to second. However, on a 1-1 pitch to Kelly Osburn, Levesque was thrown out trying to steal third.
Stephanie Nicholson reached on a one-out infield single in the top of the fourth and moved to second on Megan Carey's single up the middle two batters later. That set the stage for Ryan Realmuto's single up the middle, scoring Nicholson from second.
OSU added another run in the top of the fifth as Crystal Lee, who had earlier doubled off the wall in right, hit a 3-0 Vitek offering well over the wall in left.
Levesque was the only Lady Bear to reach second base on the day. April Luce and Stacey Hundley both had fly outs to center, the only batters to put the ball out of the infield for Baylor. Every Baylor starter struck out at least once except Danelle Arnold, who walked twice and grounded to third.
Damp conditions led to control problems for both pitchers. Vitek (11-6) was touched for six hits with a season-high five walks and eight strikeouts. Bay (12-3) issued six walks, also a season high.
Baylor and Oklahoma State conclude their two-game series here Sunday at 1 p.m.
