Late Homers Cost Softball at No. 4 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. - Fourth-ranked Oklahoma used a pair of late-inning home runs to power past Baylor 3-0 here Sunday in Big 12 Conference softball action. Baylor falls to 24-16 on the season and 0-5 in conference play. The Sooners sweep the series and improve to 30-5 and 6-2.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, OU center fielder Erin Evans broke a scoreless tie with her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right center. The Sooners added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff walk by Kelli Braitsch, Leah Gulla lifted a full-count offering over the wall in left-center.

Meanwhile, OU starter Kami Keiter solved the Baylor bats for the second straight day. Keiter (20-2) allowed just three hits and a walk with six strikeouts for her conference-leading 10th shutout of the season.

Baylor's Cristin Vitek (11-9) pitched very effectively until the two home runs, working out of a couple of jams in early innings. She worked 5.0 innings and was touched for three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Katie Decker tossed the final three outs perfectly.

Kourtny Westerfeld had two of Baylor's three hits; Kim Wilmoth had the other, a slap single down the third-base line.

Baylor returns to action Wednesday, hosting No. 20 Texas A&M for a 6:30 p.m. game at Getterman Stadium. The game will be broadcast on KRZI 1660/1580 AM.

Notes: Oklahoma now leads the all-time series 24-2, and the Sooners have won 21 straight against the Lady Bears. ... Baylor starts 0-5 in Big 12 play for the first time since starting 0-7 in league play during the 1998 campaign. ... Prior to this season, Baylor had never played more than four consecutive ranked opponents; Sunday's game was the fifth of eight straight against ranked teams.
