Starting pitcher Steven White was just a freshman back in 2000 when the Bears won the Big 12 title. Now a senior, White quickly grabbed the role of Friday night starter and has compiled a 3-1 record with a conference-leading 67 strikeouts in 59.1 innings. White sat down with Baylor Athletic Marketing representative Cori Martin last week for a short Q&A session.
What is your craziest ambition?
"I want to get a tattoo for some reason. Mark McCormick is trying to convince me to get one. I also want to go skydiving."
What is your best non-athletic talent?
White had no answer, but teammate Ross Bennett chimed in, suggesting, "modeling, because he has a great body."
What was your favorite television show growing up?
"Saved by the Bell."
What kind of car would love to own?
"A Denali - jacked up, that would be awesome. I want big tires on my Denali."
Why did you choose Baylor over the other schools that recruited you?
"I think it was just the atmosphere here. Baylor didn't start off as one of my top schools, but then I came on a visit here and I liked it. I didn't want to go to a huge school. I wanted to go to a place where I could see people I knew. You can meet more people like that."
How do you handle criticism?
"I just take it with a grain of salt. You hear it sometimes from our fans even, but you just have to learn from it. A lot of the times the people that criticize you have no idea what they are even talking about. It is important to learn from the constructive criticism that your coaches give you, but aside from that you can't let it bother you."
What is your greatest fear?
"Not to have a family."
What ballpark has been your favorite to play in?
"Minute Maid Park in Houston. I'm from Houston, so I had a lot of people come out and watch. My favorite collegiate park to play at is A&M, because it has open fields."
Who is the worst dancer on the team?
"I think it could be me. It's either Zane (Carlson) or me ."
Do you have any bad habits you would like to break?
"Being lazy off the field; I watch a lot of TV. The Simpsons and That 70's Show are my favorites."
What is the best thing about Baylor baseball?
"I think it's the relationships that we have. I have never been in a situation like this where you have such an open relationship with the other players and coaches, where we can talk about anything we want. There is also tremendous support for our program."
What is your least favorite practice drill?
"Medi-ball circuits. It's a lot of running and sit-ups with the medicine ball."
What makes your day?
"Coming out to the ballpark and practicing on a nice day. Even if it's a boring practice, just coming out here makes me happy. Then, I like to go home and watch TV. I am very easily pleased."
Favorite place to eat?
"A Mexican food place in Houston called Esteban's. They named it after me -- at least, that's what I'd like to think. When I'm home I eat there at least three times a week."
Tell me 3 words to describe you.
"Accountable, reliable, and honest."
What do you do on road trips to pass the time?
"I play cards with the guys. We like to play Soy. I also read a lot of baseball online. I like to keep up with the guys I played with this summer and see how they are doing."
What is the most fun you have ever had playing baseball?
"Last summer up in the Cape. I had a bad year last year, so just being able to be up there and relax again. I started throwing a lot better and I had a lot of fun with the guys. We were all from different teams but we got along really well."
If you had 24 hours to live your dream day, what would you do?
"Go fish, play a round of golf, eat at Esteban's, go water skiing and watch TV the rest of the night."
What sets Baylor apart from every other university, in your opinion?
"We have really nice athletic facilities."
*Nobody knows how much I like to________________.
"Make fun of Zane (Carlson). We have a friendly war that is going on."
